Dear Japan

Flower, Fire, sparkles in the dark night sky.
My favorite thing about Japanese summer. Festivals, shaved strawberry ice, dark chochin lamp, smell of festival food... ahh I can even hear people saying "Tamaya~!!!" to the night sky.
I'm wishing people in North East Japan will be able to have a summer fireworks and festivals one day soon after recovery, I was hoping that and while I was painting this.
This art work will be sold at "Dear Japan" Benefit on June 4th at ACNY gallery in New York.
I hope everybody can come out!

Oh! yes we did make a blog, here you can see amazing artists' works which will be in the benefit as well. check it out---->http://dearjapanny.wordpress.com/

"Lace and Pattern" for Art Connects New York Benefit Show

These are for a benefit show at Art Connects New York, a non-profit art organization in SOHO, NY. The show is going to be about 30 artists creating new works altering the pages of books.

It's been 2 weeks since the earthquake in Japan. I was working on these images a week after it happen and I was in a zombie state of mind. I thought about why am I even creating art when I really want to do is help people in Japan...?  I felt so little and powerless... And I started to think about this project. All I wanted to do was to make something beautiful. Beautiful colors, pattern and a tiny bit of humor.  After all I didn't want to make something depressing or sad.  And when I start painting these patterns on the book pages and working with a repetition movement, I started to feel better, this is the healing power of Art??? Maybe it is.

I wish my art can heal somebody oneday, even a small smile or forget about hard time for a one second.  That would be my goal!

The benefit is on April 6th, more info ---> http://www.artconnectsnewyork.org/

Tsuru Project

http://tsuruproject.wordpress.com/

On March 11th a 9.0 M earthquake shook Northeastern Japan. The following Tsunami and nuclear scare have had a huge impact on the people of Japan, leaving many to face a devastating situation.

Me and my friends who have family and friends in Japan started The Tsuru Project. Right now we are posting selected organizations that you can donate from international countries. We are also planning on doing an Artists benefit auction and some other events to raise money for the relief effort.

We also have an facebook page where we post all the information about events and benefits happening around town. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tsuru-Project/160766680643360

Thank you so much for all the love and support!

Visiting MICA

I visited MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) in Baltimore last Monday to give a guest lecture and a stencil demo at Marcos Chin's class.

The train ride from NY  was smooth and fun, Marcos had a microwaved sandwich and I had a half frozen one (lady asked us hot or cold and that's what we got...) hahaha

Marcos' has such an ambitious and creative class at MICA,  students have one semester to finish a production of the play "snow queen," From set design, costume design to acting all in 3 months!  It was like watching project runway, I was very impressed. Here is their website-->http://snowqueenremix.tumblr.com/

Giving a demo and lecture to his class was very easy, the students were nice and asked many questions (curious minds always make me happy when I do the lecture!)  It's a very talented class and Marcos is such an amazing teacher!  Lots to learn from him, I wish I had his class when I was in my undergrad...

Here are some fun photos of Marcos and I dressing up in their costumes :-)

The class was about 6 hours long~ fewwww we were all sleepy after that...

Thank you Jose for letting me stay in your beautiful apartment, and thank you Marcos for inviting me!

They will have 3 shows in early Dec, if you are in Baltimore, you should go see!
